UAAP S72 Final Four: Lady Tams barge into Finals, Men’s team stalled
September 19th, 2009 by ian.evascoFar Eastern University’s basketball teams had contrasting fates today, as the Lady Tamaraws earned a return trip to the UAAP finals, while the Men’s team was halted by the University of the East Red Warriors.
Coach Mike Oliver’s ladies rode on the 35-point effort of Allana Lim to thwart upset-conscious University of Santo Tomas, 74-71. FEU led from start to finish but UST threatened with a late run in the final three minutes to rattle the defending champs. But key shots from Lim and Raiza Palmera were enough to lift the Green and Gold through the end. Palmera chipped in 21 points while, Ann Leonardo paced UST with 20 points.
The Lady Tams will meet the Adamson Lady Falcons, which drubbed third-seeded De La Salle in their Final Four showdown earlier in the day, 55-50.
Meanwhile, the FEU Tamaraws failed to end a tumultous week on a high note after falling against UE 84-74. Paul Lee picked a right time to have a career game, as he torched the Tams with 26 points highlighted by multiple bombs beyond the arc during a 16-5 run in the fourth quarter.
Paul Sanga also had a memorable performance with 22 points but struggled with cramps in the closing minutes. FEU has been among the hottest topics of sports pages over the past week. The FEU Cheering Squad ended a 11-year title drought in the Cheerdance Competition last Sunday and news of Barroca’s untimely exit exploded a couple of days after.
FEU ended its silence regarding the Barroca-matter, issuing a press release stating, “With the objective of improving team chemistry, the FEU Tamaraws have decided to play our Final Four game today without Mark Barroca.”
The FEU vs UE rubber match will be on Thursday afternoon at the Araneta Coliseum.
